Staphylococcus aureus is the main agent of infections during peritoneal dialysis (PD). The presence of S. aureus in the nasal cavity has been extensively studied and suggested as a risk factor of dialysis-related infections, whereas coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) species are frequently considered part of the normal human microbiota. Canastra cheese is produced from raw cow's milk, and it is made at the farmhouse level using artisanal procedures and natural starters. The aim of this work was to determine the main hygienic-sanitary indicators and enterotoxigenic staphylococcal strains present during the manufacturing of traditional cheese of Serra da Canastra region, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Samples from 10 farms were studied, and they included: water employed in the process, raw milk, natural starters, cheese curd before salting and cheese after five days of ripening. The population dynamics of Staphylococcus spp. was studied during the ripening of Canastra Minas cheese at three farms located in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The presence of coagulase (coa), thermonuclease (nuc), and enterotoxin (sea, seb, sec, and sed) genes was investigated in Staphylococcus strains isolated during the 60-day cheese-ripening period. The presence of the staphylococcal enterotoxins A, C, and D was also investigated in the cheese samples. Cheese samples that were matured for 0, 7, 15, 30, and 45 days presented staphylococci counts from 10³ to 10(8)cfu/g. The aim of the study was to analyze epidemiological and microbiological aspects of oral colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus of health care workers in a cancer hospital. Interview and saliva sampling were performed with 149 health care workers. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration. Identification of 129 Micrococcaceae strains isolated from food of animal origin ArchiMer

129 strains of Micrococcaceae were isolated from food of animal origin (minced meat, cakes with confectioner's custard) on Baird-Parker medium. 120 were Staphylococcus and 9 Micrococcus, according to the ID 32 STAPH-System (1989). El objetivo de este trabajo fue conocer la prevalencia de especies y perfil de resistencia a betalactámicos en estafilococos aislados de infecciones en caninos y felinos. En perros, de 207 aislamientos, el porcentaje de las especies identificadas fue: S. intermedius 29,5%, S. aureus y S. simulans 20,8%, S. saprophyticus 12,6%, S. chromogenes 10,6%, S. haemolyticus 3,9% y S. epidermidis 1,9%. Acute toxicity test (LD-50) using toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1) was tested in BALB/c, C57BL/6 and Swiss mice. Animals (n = 10) were intraperitoneally injected with TSST-1 (0.01-10.0µg/mouse) followed 4h later by potentiating dose of lipopolysaccharide (75.0µg of LPS - E. coli O111:B4) and cumulative mortality was recorded over 72h. Control animals received either TSST-1 or LPS alone. The data were submitted to qui-Square test and acute toxicity test was calculated by probit analysis (confidence limits expressed as µg toxin/kg). BALB/c mice was the most sensitive (20.0µg/kg, 95% confidence limits: 9.0-92.0) followed by C57BL/6 (38.5µg/kg, 95% confidence limits: 9.11- 401.6). Microbiological analyses of chicken eggs in Recife and Salvador have shown a high occurrence of Salmonella in the egg shells and yolks. Likewise, the occurrence of Salmonella plus coagulase-positive staphylococci in Coalho cheese reached alarming levels. The data revealed a significant risk of infections and intoxications from consuming these foods in the cities.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of nisaplin, commercial product having nisin as active component, in decreasing the staphylococcal population in refrigerated pizza doughs. The refrigerated pizza dough pieces randomly chosen were dipped in the solutions with nisaplin concentrations of 1.0 x 10-3 g and 1.0 x 10-2 g nisaplin/mL named for the treatment A and B and kept under refrigeration (7 °C ± 1 °C). Analisaram-se 80 amostras de leite cru refrigerado a 4°C e estocado por 48 horas em tanques refrigeradores de propriedades rurais do estado de Minas Gerais quanto à contagem e identificação de Staphylococcus sp. e detecção de enterotoxinas estafilocócicas (SE) e da toxina da síndrome do choque tóxico (TSST-1). Staphylococcus sp. foi detectado em 100% das amostras de leite de tanque refrigerador em contagens que variaram de 1,0 × 10(5) a 2,5 × 10(7) UFC/ml (média = 5,60 log UFC/ml; s = 0,53 e CV = 9,5%). Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a atividade in vitro do extrato alcoólico de própolis, contra agentes da mastite bovina, comparando-o aos principais antimicrobianos utilizados no tratamento convencional. Foram utilizados 36 isolados coagulase-positivos de Staphylococcus sp. e 27 isolados de Streptococcus sp.; 94,4% dos Staphylococcus sp. e 85,2% dos Streptococcus sp. foram susceptíveis ao extrato de própolis.

In the Americas, the Ixodidae ticks Amblyomma cajennense are responsible for severe impact on livestock and public health. In the present work, we present the isolation and molecular identification of a group of culturable bacteria associated with A. cajennense eggs from females sampled in distinct geographical sites in southeastern Brazil. Antibacterial activity of extracts of Acacia aroma against methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus BJM

Antibacterial activity of organic and aqueous extracts of Acacia aroma was evaluated against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis. Inhibition of bacterial growth was determined using agar diffusion and bioautographic methods. Among all assayed organic extracts only ethanolic and ethyl acetate extracts presented highest activities against all tested Staphylococcus strains with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 2.5 to 10 mg/ml and from 2.5 to 5 mg/ml respectively. Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a rare cause of severe infections and clinical manifestations are similar to those related to S. aureus infection. We describe a hospital-acquired bacteremia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis, misidentified as methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The oxacillin MIC was 16 µg/mL and the mecA gene and SCCmec type V were determined by PCR. Although treatment had been appropriated, the patient died after rapid progressive respiratory failure and another nosocomial sepsis. It is important not only to identify S. lugdunensis in view of its clinical course, but also to determine its susceptibility to oxacillin by detecting the mecA gene or its product.
